Fortuna vitra – this old saying, still preserved in the island dialect, nowadays speaks only of the power of the wind, whereas it once symbolised the fortune of all those depending on it. It is therefore not surprising that ancient Greeks chose this island for their new home by building the first town – Faros in the sheltered bay 2,400 years ago.
